About the Library

Borrowing Materials

  • Bring items you wish to borrow to the Library Reserve Office to transact the loan. The circulating books (the ones you can borrow for home use) are located on the south side of the Library upper level and in the Dewey Collection on the Library main level.
  • Wilberforce University students, faculty, and staff may borrow materials from the circulating collections and through OPAL and OhioLINK (either online with Wilberforce pickup or in person at participating institutions).
  • The WU identification card with barcode (or OPAL/OhioLINK barcode for visiting patrons) is the library card for all borrowers. Never borrow someone else's card and never loan your card. Library staff can determine your identification in other ways. Using your ID card makes the loan process faster.
  • Visitors from SOCHE institutions may borrow from the circulating collection according to the SOCHE direct borrowing agreement. Borrowers with OPAL or OhioLINK institutions borrowers' barcodes must present that barcoded card for direct service. Wilberforce circulation items may also be borrowed through the OPAL or OhioLINK home library computer system.
  • Items from the Circulating Main Collection are loaned for three (3) weeks with multiple renewals possible prior to the due dates. No fines are charged for overdue materials; however, the "virtual fines" will show on your patron record until the end of the semester. Excessive late "virtual fines" will deactivate your account until you have consulted with a library staff member. All "virtual fines" will disappear from your account at the end of each semester if all items have been returned. Lost materials must be paid for to activate the library account in future semesters; a "hold" is placed on transcripts of students with unpaid "lost item" library bills. While the Library attempts to contact students who have overdue and lost items, each library borrower has the responsibility to check his/her account in OPAL online, in person, or by telephone.
  • Reserve Room materials circulate in-house for two (2) hours.
  • Reference books, reserved materials, periodicals, pamphlets, newspapers, microforms, and Archival collections do not circulate and may not be borrowed. They are available for use in the library for reference and research.

Returning Materials

  • Return all materials that you have borrowed--on time or even before they are due! Respect the needs of others who may need to use these same materials. Reminders of overdue materials may be sent to you.
  • No fines are charged for overdue loans at this time. However, all loans must be returned at the end of the semester because then you are responsible for the full cost of the loan replacements and your grades/transcripts may be placed on hold. Return the items at any time and you will not be charged.
  • You may not register for classes if you have outstanding loans. (Bring the books and other items loaned with you when you return to register for the new semester or be prepared to pay for them. Any payments will be returned to you if and when the item is found/returned.

Loans from Other Libraries?

  • The WU Library can return (via courier) items you have borrowed from other libraries. Don't incur fines, return on time! Bring items to be sent back to other libraries to the Library Business Office, LRC 211, the last door on the left and the first desk.
  • Ask the Library Director if you need information about borrowing materials from other libraries.
