WU STEP UP Program

STEP-UP (Science, Technology, and Engineering Preeminent Undergraduate Program) is a program sponsored by The National Science Foundation to enhance the science and engineering education at Wilberforce University and to promote graduate education for both personal satisfaction and career advancement as well as to fulfill the needs for a diverse technical workforce for your great nation. In order to meet these goals, the program has several activities to offer our science and engineering majors.

  • Wilberforce University Pre-College Summer Program – Each year 40 incoming science and engineering freshmen are invited to participate in a 5-week experience to jumpstart their academic careers before the fall semester begins. Students will be mentored in critical reading and writing, mathematics, and either biology, computer science or engineering. Field trips to governmental, academic and corporate laboratories will expose students to cutting edge research. If you are interested in the program and want more information or want to apply online, click on its button on the left of the screen.
  • Freshmen Living and Learning Experience – All science and engineering freshmen will be housed together in the dorms to encourage collaborative learning and facilitate study.
  • Freshmen Seminar Series – World class scientists, mathematicians and engineers will give presentation on their experiences in their fields to better educate freshmen on possible career paths. For a list of seminars, please click on the calendar button on the left.
  • Peer Tutoring Program - Wilberforce University strives to give all its students as much assistance as necessary to be successful in their undergraduate programs. To this end, we hire our brightest junior and senior science and engineering students to serve as mentors and tutors for many of the science, mathematics and engineering courses. If you need help or advice about any course, the tutors are available. See Dr. Joseph McGrady to get connected with a peer tutor; visit our bulletin board on the second floor of the King Science Building for a complete list of the peer tutors, their scheduled hours and assigned courses; or click on the button to the left for this information.
  • General Chemistry Summer Residential Program – 20 science and engineering sophomores are invited to participate in a 4-week intensive summer program in general chemistry. The program focuses on General Chemistry I, and if successfully completed will exempt the student from the first semester of the course. If you are interested in the program and want more information or want to apply, click on its button on the left of the screen.
  • Summer Research – Wilberforce strongly encourages our students to either conduct research at Wilberforce or at leading labs around the nation. We have developed a partnership with Florida A&M to send four engineering students during the summer to perform research at their institution (see Dr. Fernando). If you are interested in conducting summer research at other institutions, please link on its button on the left for information about other programs, application deadlines, etc.
