Wilberforce University to Honor World-Renowned Opera Extraordinaire Kathleen Battle

August 29, 2006

Wilberforce University’s President, former US Congressman Floyd H. Flake, announced today that Wilberforce University will present the official bronzed Ray Charles Award to opera extraordinaire Kathleen Battle on August 31, 2006 at 5:30 pm at the University’s Wolfe Administration Building. The Ray Charles Award was established to honor significant contributors to the development of music performance, management, or philanthropy.

Ms. Battle’s visit to the campus will consist of a closed Music Forum (master class) with the University’s music majors, a tour of the campus, and finally the Award Ceremony and reception.

Jeremy Winston, Ray Charles Distinguished Chair of Sacred and Choral Music noted the historic nature of Ms. Battle’s visit to the Wilberforce University campus. “The Wilberforce University Choir is among the nation’s most notable choral ensembles. We are honored to be able to share our hallowed grounds with such a prestigious and sought-after talent,” stated Winston. He continued, “It is a golden opportunity for the University to call attention to the music program’s excellence, growth, and international acclaim right here at home.” The University’s choir tours nationally on an annual basis. In the past year, the Choir performed in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC, and several other locales. This year, the Choir is planning a performance overseas.

Although only at the University for less than three years, Winston has significantly extended the University Choir’s national recognition among colleges and universities. During Winston’s tenure, the Choir has performed with the likes of renowned jazz artist Rachelle Ferrell, gospel artists Donnie McClurkin and Yolanda Adams.
