MUSIC

Major Overview
The Music Program at Wilberforce University has its largest class of majors in history.  The Music Program is under the Arts and Sciences of which Dr. Eugenia Shittu is the chair.  In the fall semester of 2004 the music program had 9 music majors and one full-time faculty member; in the fall semester of 2006 the music program welcomed 20 freshman and transfer students to the music program.  This increase of majors comes as a result of a strong recruitment push from The Wilberforce University Choir, Institutional Advancement, Music Faculty, and Admissions.  Every year The Choir and Admissions visits high schools and performs an abbreviated concert, inform the students about Wilberforce, and allow the students ask direct question to current Wilberforceans.  The Choir has done this at high schools in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Baltimore, New York, Boise, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Fresno, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.  This extensive approach has led to a continued growth in the number of students choosing Wilberforce’s Music Program to their home for higher education.

With the addition of the new students, The Music Program has thirty-five music majors.  With this increase the program has been privileged to acquire three new faculty members.  Dr. Everett Jones is Assistant Professor of Piano and Principal Accompanist for The Wilberforce University Choir.  Dr. Jones graduate from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in June 2005 with his D.M.A. in piano performance.  Mr. Shelton Kilby is Music Professor and Music Consultant to the Dean of Academic Affairs.  Mr. Kilby is an accomplished composer and pianist.  His compositions have been performed by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; he is preparing to release a CD of his piano arrangements and compositions.  Mr. Tifton Graves is Visiting Professor of Voice.  Mr. Graves is a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Music.  Mr. Graves is a sought after tenor soloist and has won critical acclaim for his extensive performances.
